The Alamosa Board of County Commissioners announced on April 8 that April will be recognized as both Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Alamosa County.

These proclamations highlight the county’s commitment to supporting families, preventing abuse, and raising awareness about sexual violence. The initiatives aim to foster safer communities and encourage collective responsibility for child welfare and survivor support.

In the proclamation for Child Abuse Prevention Month, commissioners said prevention is possible through strong policies, early support, and community investment. They noted that positive childhood experiences can help children thrive and reduce the effects of adverse experiences. The statement reads: “Every child and family holds tremendous promise, and we share a collective responsibility to promote protective factors, prevent abuse and neglect, and ensure children grow up in safe, healthy, and nurturing environments.” The proclamation urges all citizens to recognize that child abuse is preventable by committing to supportive actions within their communities.

For Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), the board marked 25 years of progress in advocating for survivors’ rights. This year’s theme is “25 Years Strong: Looking Back, Moving Forward.” The proclamation states: “We honor the survivors who have shared their stories and the advocates who have led the way. Their courage reminds us that prevention is possible and that each of us has a role to play.” Statistics cited include reports that over half of women (53%) and nearly a third of men (29%) experience contact sexual violence during their lifetimes. The document also highlights disparities among different demographic groups.

The proclamations emphasize building strong partnerships among professionals from various sectors—including education, healthcare, law enforcement—as well as community organizations. Both statements stress ongoing efforts are needed so every resident feels safe, supported, and valued.
