The City of Durango announced on April 10 that phase two of the College and 8th Traffic Calming project will resume on April 20. The work is set to include replacing and reconfiguring traffic signals, pavement milling and overlay, as well as new striping.
The project aims to improve safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians along the corridor. The upgrades are expected to be completed this year.
According to the city, the current phase will involve changing the road from four lanes to three lanes with buffered bike lanes. Other improvements include sidewalk enhancements, curb ramp upgrades, a pedestrian refuge island at East 3rd Street and East 8th Avenue, improved bus stops with pull-outs, and updated traffic signals at East College Drive and East 8th Avenue.
Work completed last season included removing and replacing sidewalk ramps along College Drive and 8th Avenue. Crews also installed an upgraded fire hydrant and water valves at the intersection of College Drive and 8th Avenue. Foundations were built for new traffic signals, while electrical conduits were placed for a modernized power supply supporting both intersection lighting and signal operations.
The project is funded by the city’s Half Cent Sales and Use Tax Fund approved in 2015 along with federal and state grant funding. More information about the project can be found on the city’s engagement page.
