The Durango City Council approved on April 7 the conveyance of a city-owned parcel at 271 Twin Buttes Ave. to Elevation Land Trust for the proposed development of 29 workforce housing units.
The decision is intended to address local housing needs by supporting long-term stability through a land trust model. The move aligns with goals in the Durango Strategic Plan to foster innovative housing partnerships and strengthen economic resilience within the community.
According to city officials, the parcel was originally conveyed to Durango as part of Twin Buttes development’s housing obligations, formalized through agreements in 2022 and 2024. The council’s regular meeting also included proclamations designating April as Earth Day Month and the week of April 13 as Arbor Week.
During the meeting, councilors received an update from the city manager regarding a certificate of sufficiency issued for petitions submitted by the No Secret Police in Durango Initiative Committee. Verification found that petitioners collected more than enough signatures required by city charter based on votes cast in November 2025.
Council members were also briefed on current water conditions, learning that extreme drought persists as of April 2. Public Works will recommend enacting stage one drought restrictions next week, which would limit lawn watering and reduce municipal water use activities such as vehicle washing and hydrant flushing.
In other actions, eight grants under Durango Creates! were approved to support creative placemaking projects, while three Re:New Grants were awarded for visible improvements to commercial or mixed-use properties.
