The Durango City Council proclaimed on April 7 that April 13–19, 2026 will be recognized as Arbor Week, highlighting the city’s ongoing commitment to urban forestry and environmental stewardship.

Arbor Week aims to emphasize the important role trees play in improving air quality, conserving water, reducing urban heat, and enhancing the appearance and livability of Durango. The proclamation calls on residents, businesses, and community organizations to join in activities supporting the city’s urban canopy.

To celebrate Arbor Week, a series of events will take place throughout the week. These include an arborist panel discussion with local tree experts sharing advice on tree care and planting practices; a community Arbor Day celebration featuring demonstrations, educational opportunities, and a nature walk; a tree seedling giveaway for residents; a guided walk from the Durango Community Recreation Center to 29th Street Park led by town arborist Ben Rieck; and educational outreach programs aimed at schools and community members.

The city has been recognized as a Tree City USA community for 46 years. This designation reflects Durango’s dedication to effective management of its urban forest and continued public engagement.

Residents are encouraged to participate in these events or plant trees in their neighborhoods. Additional information about Arbor Week activities can be found at DurangoCO.gov/ArborDay.
