The Durango City Council announced on Apr. 3 that it will vote at its next meeting on whether to convey a city-owned parcel at 271 Twin Buttes Ave. to Elevation Land Trust for the development of 29 workforce housing units.
The proposed conveyance is intended to support long-term housing stability through a land trust model and aligns with the city’s strategic goals of fostering innovative housing partnerships and strengthening economic resilience.
According to the city, the parcel was originally transferred as part of Twin Buttes development’s housing obligations, formalized in a Memorandum of Understanding in 2022 and a Housing Compliance Agreement in 2024. The council’s regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers at 949 East Second Ave.
During this meeting, councilors will also receive an update from the city manager regarding a certificate of sufficiency issued for a local petition initiative. The city clerk verified that petitions submitted by the No Secret Police in Durango Initiative Committee met requirements set by the City Charter, which mandates signatures from no less than fifteen percent of voters from the last municipal election. Of the total votes cast in November 2025—6,982—the required number was set at 1,047 signatures; verification confirmed that out of fifty petitions checked from eighty-four submitted, there were enough valid signatures (1,051) from registered electors.
Other agenda items include votes on approving eight recommended Durango Creates! round one grants and funding recommendations for three Re:New Grants. The Durango Creates! program supports public creative projects through placemaking initiatives led by the Durango Creative District. The Re:New Grant program offers matching reimbursement grants up to $5,000 for visible improvements to commercial or mixed-use properties; upcoming projects include stucco repair at Toh-Atin Gallery and exterior maintenance at The Wells Group building.
