The Forest Service, San Juan National Forest, announced on Mar. 26 that a prescribed burn is scheduled to take place at Sauls Creek around the Deer Valley subdivision this Saturday and potentially Sunday. The operation will proceed if current weather forecasts and conditions remain favorable.
Prescribed burns are conducted to manage forest health and reduce wildfire risk in the area. Such activities help clear underbrush and maintain ecological balance, which can prevent larger uncontrolled fires in the future.
Sarah Beck, Acting District Ranger for the Forest Service, said there will be a significant presence of public affairs staff on site during the burn. “We have a good number of public affairs staff on this fire and will have several staffed sandwich boards in the vicinity to address members of the public,” Beck said.
Beck also said that communication efforts are underway with local officials to keep residents informed about fire activity. “Our Public Affairs Officer has been working with Rob Farino and I believe a reverse 911 message will go out as well alerting people of the prescribed fire activity,” she said.
For those seeking more information about the prescribed burn or related forest management activities, contact details for the Pagosa Ranger District Office were provided along with an online resource from the Forest Service.
The broader implication of such prescribed burns is continued emphasis on proactive land management practices designed to protect communities while sustaining healthy forests.
